Our Family cottage is located on Shadow Lake, in the Kawartha Lakes region, just off Highway 35, about one to one and a half hours from Toronto. The address that’s accepted by most GPS systems is 24 Vern Court, Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. Occasionally a particular GPS or web search may prefer 24 Vern Court, Norland, Ontario, or 24 Vern Court, Coboconk, Ontario. (Don’t ask us why, we have no idea!) Although part of the chain of the Kawartha lakes, Shadow Lake is smaller, more private and quieter in general because it has no lock to Balsam Lake to the south, isolating it from the Trent-Severn Waterway and other boaters using the lock system. We ask that our guests respect this quieter, family environment. The Kawartha Lakes area is situated on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, Huron-Wendat and more recently, the Haudenosaunee peoples. Kawartha is an anglicization of Ka-wa-tha (from Ka-wa-tae-gum-maug or Gaa-waategamaag), which was coined in 1895 by Martha Whetung of the Curve Lake First Nations. It meant "land of reflections" in the Anishinaabe language, according to Whetung. The word was later changed by tourism promoters to Kawartha, meaning "bright waters and happy lands.”
The cottage is located between the small villages of Coboconk (seven minutes to Foodland) and Norland (three minutes to the Norland Food market). We have found that all our needs for an extended stay, including dine-in restaurants as well as take-out food can be found in these two communities.
If you are looking for a wider range of dining experiences or can’t find what you are looking for in these villages, Fenlon Falls is a picturesque small town, centered on the Trent-Severn Waterway, Lock 34. It is about 23 minutes south on Highway 35 and east on Highway 8. The lock sits in an area right in front of restaurants and a brewpub on Water Street, with other shops and services available on Colbourne Street, it’s main “drag”. There are drug stores, gift stores, clothing stores, and even tatoo parlour for those that like to get “inked” for more information have a look a <a href="http://www.explorefenelonfalls.com. If you plan on visiting our cottage, there’s many great communities along the Trent-Severn “Trail Towns” where you can stop for food, drink and relaxing vistas; see https://tswtrailtowns.ca/
